It had rhythm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step\u2026 step\u2026 step\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I froze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHello?\u201d I said out loud, immediately realizing how stupid that sounded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sound stopped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Silence filled my head again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I laughed nervously. \u201cOkay\u2026 stress.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not random,\u201d I interrupted. \u201cIt moves.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tracing the edges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finding something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat are you looking for?\u201d I asked, my voice barely holding together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The footsteps stopped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Right at the front of my head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Behind my eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A long pause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c\u2026a way out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My blood ran cold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo,\u201d I said quickly. \u201cNo, you\u2019re not getting out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A soft laugh echoed inside me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not loud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But deep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c\u2026I already am.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next day, things felt\u2026 off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
